Breathe Records is an independent Northern California hip-hop label founded by DEA 40831 in 2001 so he could release his music independently. The name DEA 40831 brings together San Jose’s 408 and Monterey Bay’s 831.
After moving to the 831, DEA met DJ Joe Ghadi. Their after-school recordings grew into original beats and DEA’s first West Koast album, later released as West Koast Vol. 2. He sold $5 CDs at Salinas cruising spots.
Bay Area rap and local 831 artists shaped the sound, but bass was the goal: make the subwoofers go crazy. DEA and a friend even held woofer battles in the Salinas mall parking lot. He launched Breathe Records to distribute the music, which grew into a catalog that includes Californication and Judgement Day.
